Gene Therapy Improves Vision

Patients with Choroideremia which is a form of blindness that progresses over time; there currently is no way to stop this process. But researchers found that gene therapy can help revert some of these effects. Gene therapy is where they inject the same gene as the missing or defective gene and this helps solve the problem somewhat. Choroideremia is caused by a mutation in the CHM gene on the X chromosome. It causes blindness because this makes the choroid degrade. This rare condition is found in 1 in every 50,000 people and will eventually lead to complete blindness. Gene therapy can help prevent the patient with Choroideremia to come to the stage of complete loss of vision.
